An interesting issue that can not be ignored, is just everything about the Dalai Lama, all concerning the Tibetan traditions, Buddhist teachings.
Wikipedia reminds us that the Dalai Lama (from the Mongolian dalai, "ocean" and the Tibetan lama, "spiritual teacher" or "guru") is the title that gets the leader of the Tibetan government in exile and the leader spiritual of Lamaism or Tibetan Buddhism before the Chinese invasion.
Buddhists believe the Dalai Lamas are emanations of Avalokiteshvara, but also believe that the employer of Tibet is not a Buddha but a Bodhisattva, and think that after his death, his subtle consciousness takes an interval of forty-nine days, at least, to be born again in a child from birth and may show signs of its special character.
We add Wikipedia in its analysis, traditionally, the Dalai Lama was the spiritual and temporal leader of Tibet. It is also the spiritual leader of all the followers of Lamaism or Tibetan Buddhism, in most Lamaist countries like Mongolia and Bhutan, and among Tibetan Buddhist communities around the world. However, many countries like Bhutan and Mongolia Lamaist also have local-elected leaders similar to the Dalai Lama and considered the embodiment of deities, which represent part of the administrative structure of Tibetan Buddhism throughout the world as is the case of Je Khenpo of Bhutan and Buddhism Jebtsundamba Khutuktu in Mongolian. The Dalai Lama was himself the supreme head of a theocratic feudal absolutist monarchy, which lasted until the invasion of Tibet by China in 1950. The Lamas were considered part of the elite organization in the feudal system of Tibetan society, where the vast majority of the population consisted of slaves, where 5% of it was in the service of the Lamas. The Dalai Lama lived in the Potala Palace of 1000 rooms located in the city of Lhasa.
After the invasion of China, the Dalai Lama went into exile and organize peaceful resistance from the outside, in the town of Dharamsala.
The truth says Wikipedia, which usually translated as "ocean of wisdom", this title was forged by the Mongol chief to accept Genkhis Khan Sonam Gyatso as outstanding teacher, "reincarnation of Buddha on earth" Mongolian people by encouraging the conversion to vajray Buddhism? na. Note we are told, that in this case was the translation Dalay Gyama-Tsho (Gyatso), the name of the Dalai Lamas. Tibetan Buddhists believe the Dalai Lamas are emanations of the Buddha Avalokitesvara. Although not a teacher but a Bodhisattva Buddha, is the patron of Tibet and believe that after his death, his subtle consciousness takes an interval of forty-nine days, at most, to incarnate again in a child who from his birth can signal their special character. Avalokitesvara is an important deity in Tibetan Buddhism and is considered in the teachings vajray? Na as a Buddha. In contrast, for the teaching mah? And? Na is seen more as a high level bodhisattva.
After the death of the Dalai Lama, the Panchen Lama is responsible for recognizing his reincarnation, or tulku (usually a child) with signals set and this becomes the new Dalai Lama. In turn, the Dalai Lama must recognize the reincarnation of the Panchen Lama after his death
To date there are 14 Dalai Lama. At death each Dalai Lama, the monks (lamas) Yellow Monastery designate his next reincarnation in a young child, playing a series of signs in accordance with their religion, in the time interval between the death of a Dalai Lama and majority of the next, the Monastery power directly exercised by appointing a regent.
The following list shows the Dalai Lama have been: Gendun Drup 1391-1474, 1476-1542 Gendun Gyatso, Sonam Gyatso1543-1588; Yonten Gyatso1589-1616, Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso1617-1682; Tsangyang Gyatso1683-1706, Kelsang Gyatso1708-1757; Jamphel Gyatso 1758-1804; Lungtok Gyatso1805-1815, Tsultrim Gyatso1816-1837; Khedrub Gyatso1835-1855; Trinley Gyatso1856-1875, Thubten Gyatso1876-1933, Tenzin Gyatso1935 - Present (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anexo:Dalái_Lamas )
Conclusion
Definitely for Tibetan Buddhism, as misrespuestas.com says the Dalai Lama is a tulku (a tulku is an individual who consciously decided to reincarnate many times to continue their religious purposes) of the Gelugpa lineage, dating from 1391 of our was (The Gelug school of Buddhism is founded by Tsongkhapa (1357-1419), philosopher and spiritual leader of Tibetan). Tibetan Buddhists believe the Dalai Lama is one of innumerable incarnations of Avalokitesvara, one of many Buddhas, which includes the concept of compassion.
